We're Going Personal Internet-Enabled Device-Free with Yondr

Dear Parents and Guardians,

At The Urban Assembly Institute of Math & Science for Young Women, we’re committed to creating a learning environment where every student can thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally. In accordance with the new Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, which prohibits students from accessing personal electronic devices during the school day, we are implementing a comprehensive policy. Beginning September 4, 2025, from bell-to-bell (8:30 AM to 2:50 PM), students are required to place all personal internet-enabled devices, including cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, and laptops, into a school-provided Yondr pouch or school-provided lock box. This policy will be posted on the school's official website at www.uainstitute.org.

This year, we will launch the Yondr Device-Free Schools Program—a proven approach that supports student focus, well-being, and connection by removing digital distractions during the school day. For over a decade, Yondr’s pouch-based program has led to powerful results:

● 86% of schools reported improved safety and student wellness

● 84% of schools saw increased engagement in class

● 68% of schools experienced academic gain

● 44% of schools reduced behavioral referrals

How the Program Works

On the first day of school, each student will be assigned a Yondr pouch—a secure, lockable case for storing personal devices. Students are responsible for bringing their pouch to and from school each day and keeping it in good condition.

Upon arrival: Students power off their cell phone, AirPods, smartwatch, and any other personal internet-enabled device (or switch them to airplane mode), place all devices in the pouch, and lock it upon entry into the building.

During the school day (8:30 AM - 2:50 PM): Students keep the locked pouch in their backpack or locker. Devices must remain secured in the pouch during all instructional time, transitions, and indoor lunch.

During indoor lunch: Per Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, students who remain indoors in the cafeteria will not have access to their devices; they must remain locked in pouches.

During outdoor lunch: For safety reasons, students who go outside for lunch will be allowed to unlock their pouches upon exiting the building. Upon re-entry to the building, students will relock their devices in their pouches.

At dismissal (2:50 PM): Students who do not stay after school will unlock pouches at designated stations to retrieve their devices.

After School Time: Students will adhere to the electronics-free policy during all after-school programs and activities.

This process is quick, simple, and will be supervised by staff as part of our daily routine.

Staying Connected: Parent/Guardian Communication Procedures

Student safety is our top priority. We will follow our standard safety protocols in the event of an emergency.

To Reach Your Child in an Emergency: Please contact our Main Office at 718-260-2300. Our key contacts are Jean Longmore, Dean of Students and Debbie Normandia, Parent Coordinator. They will ensure your message is relayed promptly to your child.

For Your Child to Reach You: Phones are available in the Main Office (room 145) for your child to call you if necessary. A staff member will assist them.

Automated Alert System: Our school uses Gama messaging to send important alerts and information to families. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date with the school by contacting our Parent Coordinator at [email protected] or by calling the main office at 718–260-2300.

Exceptions

We understand that certain circumstances may require device use.

Mandatory Exceptions: Mandatory exceptions per Chancellor's Regulation A-413 will be made for students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 plan that explicitly specifies the use of an electronic device for educational accommodations.

Request Process: Requests for exceptions must be submitted in writing by a parent/guardian to the Assistant Principal, Annie Annunziato. The request should clearly state the reason for the exception and how the device will be used.

Designated Approver: The Assistant Principal, Annie Annunziato is the sole approver of all exceptions.

Decision Timeline: A decision will be provided within 10 school days of receiving a complete request.

Lost or Damaged Devices

The school is not responsible for the replacement or repair of stolen or damaged personal internet-enabled devices.

● If a student's personal electronic device is stolen or damaged at school, they must immediately report it to a teacher or Dean.

● The student will be directed to the Deans’ Office to complete an incident report.

● The school will conduct an investigation and inform the family of the findings.

Disciplinary Responses for Policy Violations

Violations of this policy will result in progressive disciplinary measures in alignment with the NYCPS Discipline Code and other relevant regulations.

First Violation (e.g., device confiscated, damaged pouch, or forgotten pouch): The device will be confiscated and secured in the Deans' office (room 304) for the remainder of the school day. A Dean will call home to inform the family. The student may be issued a lunch detention or other consequence per the NYCPS Discipline Code.

Second Violation: The device will be confiscated and returned only to a parent/guardian at the end of the school day. The student will be assigned a more serious disciplinary consequence, such as an in-school suspension.

Patterned Violations (e.g., consistent unauthorized device use, or repeatedly forgetting the pouch): The student will be required to turn in their personal internet-enabled device to the Deans daily for safe storage. The device will be returned at dismissal. Further violations may result in an out-of-school suspension, in accordance with the NYCPS Discipline Code.

Damaged Pouch: Examples of pouch damage include a bent pin, ripped fabric, deep scratches on the lock exterior or green ring, or intentional pen marks on the inside. Damaged pouches will result in a $10 fee for a replacement, payable to the Deans’ Office.

Lost Pouch: If a student forgets their pouch, their device will be collected. Consistent forgotten pouches will be considered lost, and a $10 replacement fee will be charged.

We know that change takes partnership—and we’re here to support a smooth transition for your family. If you have questions or concerns, please email Dean Jean Longmore at [email protected], or AP Annie Annunziato at [email protected].

Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create a focused, present, and positive school environment for every student.

Yours sincerely,

Annie Annunziato Assistant Principal
